The GCSE syllabus (following the EDEXCEL specification) covers a wide range of set works within the Areas of Study (AoS)

The topics vary from:

                AoS1: Western Classical Music 1600-1899

                AoS2: Music in the 20th Century

                AoS3: Popular Music in Context

                AoS4: World Music

The three areas of assessment are;

  •              Performing (30%) - Recorded Performances
  •              Composing (30%) - Coursework & Recordings
  •              Listening and Appraising (40%) - Exam on the AoS


GCSE musicians are expected to take part in public performances whether as individuals, in small groups or as a class. The students explore the set works through practical and theoretical study. Students are encouraged to undertake individual instrumental or vocal tuition in order to gain maximum marks in their performances. The course is an exciting and challenging one and those opting for music GCSE always show a great deal of interest and enthusiasm!
